Quarterly Newsletter #10

As you can see by my new profile picture, I am busy looking into the future! I also want to share with you the celebration of our two-year anniversary of our quarterly newsletter! We are gaining momentum and support every day, and that means we can help more families—and for that we thank YOU!

We are working with a new partner family; the Pledger’s, and we hope to make their dream of homeownership a reality by the middle of the summer. We are also building a modular home to be available on the open market thanks to a MSHDA program that will finance the project initially. We are looking to learn from that experience and measure how and if homes that are built offsite (known as modulars) will be a viable way we can impact the housing issues in Mecosta County in the future.

We are busy as always with our Critical Home Repair and Veterans projects. The need is great and growing every day as current homeowners experience emergent home repairs that they are unable to afford. Please know that we realize we would not be able to assist families in Mecosta County with their housing needs without the help and support of all of you who support us.

We hope we will see you at our MCHFH Annual Golf Outing, June 19, 2024 at the Royal in Canadian Lakes. You can find information about our programs and all our events on our website at mecostahabitat.org.

I wish you a safe, happy and healthy summer. Thank you for all you do!

OUR HOME OWNERSHIP PROGRAM

Homeownership is so much more than four walls and a roof to me, it's the ultimate dream come true for a single mother. It is an amazing stability in a very uncertain world. It's our peace and the stage of all memories to come.

This is our blessing ~Michelle

OUR CRITICAL HOME REPAIR PROGRAM

New accessibility option

This elderly couple was unable to safely move in and out of their home. After they contacted us we were able to partner with Disability Advocates of Kent County to address some of the interior safety needs as well as installing a ramp. This is a new program that allows us to rent the ramp to the family for as long as they need it. The rent is based on their income. Once it is no longer needed the ramp can be utilized for another family in need. Interested please visit our website and apply for our critical home repair program. https://mecostahabitat.org/critical-home-repair

OUR VETERANS PROGRAM

Resources and Income based funding available for veterans

OUR DONORS - Our Foundation

Annual Golf Outing

by Brenda Westfall, Golf Outing Committee Chair

The State Savings Bank Golf Outing, brought to you by B103.9 and 107.1 The Drive, is our primary, annual fundraising event coming up on Wednesday, June 19th at The Royal Golf Course - Canadian Lakes.  Registration includes 18 holes of golf, breakfast donuts, boxed lunch, and reception with heavy hors d'oeuvres, golf prizes, silent auction, and 50/50 raffle.

There is a dedicated golf outing committee that starts planning the event in early Spring.  Below are comments from two committee members, who have helped organize since the beginning years of the golf outing, to share with you the importance of the event.

Marshall Henry shares: the annual Mecosta County Habitat Golf Outing has become a much needed fundraiser since we started for two reasons. The additional funding supplements the individual donations and income from our Restore and the costs for providing a home have risen tremendously since Habitat began in the early 90's. The second reason that our Golf Outing has become critical is the human networking between the staff and volunteers and the community which provide much needed additional funding.

Lee Wolken notes: I have been involved in the annual golf outing for over 10 years and it has continued to grow in the number of golfers and sponsors. When I started we only had hole sponsors and silent auction items that were donated, but with new golf outing committee members with new ideas, the sponsorship for different aspects of the outing, such as title sponsors, lunch sponsors, cart sponsors, reception sponsors, etc., has resulted in a big boost in funds we are able to raise. Golfers participate not only to enjoy golf and food, but to raise funds to help those in our county have a decent affordable place to live.

As MCHFH staff, I enjoy planning the golf outing with the committee and speaking to individuals and businesses about our programs and how they may support us through participation at the golf outing.  It is also very fun to participate on the day of the event with the golf specials to make the scoring a true game of golf to obtain the winning team prize, as well as the Hole in One options, the silent auction bidding and 50/50 raffle.  Golfers and volunteers are at the event supporting Mecosta County Habitat for Humanity and our programs for new homeownership, critical home repairs, and veterans and the giving atmosphere is humbling.

Thank you to each and everyone of you who are contributing and/or participating to make this "the main event" of our year!  If you still want to join us, by June 5th, please visit mecostahabitat.org/golf-outing-2024 to register or for more information, along with a list of our sponsors.  Any questions, please email bwestfall@mecostahabitat.org.

We mourn the loss of a very dedicated volunteer Terry Johnson. Terry and his wife Judy would clean and sort at the Restore.
