Mecosta County Habitat for Humanity

Mecosta Habitat Family Circle

Quarterly Newsletter #6

Hello, I’m Kim Davila, the new Board President of Mecosta County Habitat for Humanity. I was born and raised in Mecosta County, and my love for our community continues to grow. I was introduced to the Mecosta County Habitat five years ago by a fellow board member and co-worker. I learned early on that Mecosta County Habitat was the perfect fit for me, not only because I have made my passion for helping people reach their financial goals my career, but Habitat’s Vision Statement “A world where everyone has a decent place to live” resonates with my values.

Earlier this year, a friend of mine had a Habitat Family move into the

same sub division he lives in. He mentioned that Habitat should help a

couple more families move into this area. He told me that the family

has brought young life back into the neighborhood; riding bikes,

playing basketball, and bringing the exterior of the home back to its

former glory. Becoming a homeowner through Habitat for Humanity

is a partnership opportunity to invest in community families. Hearing a

friend’s testimony makes me even more proud to be a part of

MCHFH.

MCHFH offers a wide variety of programs that give people a decent

place to live which truly makes a difference in the community. I never

knew how many programs were offered until I became involved with

MCHFH. One of which programs benefiting Veterans. As someone

who has Veteran family members and friends, it is truly rewarding to

take part in a program that gives back to our Veterans who have done

so much for us. It is a privilege to represent the MCHFH board

alongside Barb, Lisa, and Brenda. I look forward to working with our

current and future families in our Home Ownership Program as well as

the continued growth of our Critical Home Repair Program and

ReStore.

OUR CRITICAL HOME REPAIR PROGRAM

My experience with Habitat For Humanity was a huge blessing.

I had just purchased my first home with my kids, which was so exciting, but I definitely had lots of work to accomplish. Me and my family had demoed the kitchen and bathroom because it wasn't in good working order, and even though we had done a lot of work on our own, we had so much more to do to make our home livable. I was overwhelmed and running out of money. Some friends recommended calling Habitat For Humanity and asking for help. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the volunteers truly showed up for us. Working alongside the team allowed me to accomplish far more than what I could have on my own. They helped me and my kids get past the overwhelm and left us in such a better living situation. I appreciate the help, sense on community, and new friends that were made through this experience.

We're so thankful for their hard work but also for the impression of encouragement and hope they left with us.

OUR VETERANS PROGRAM

The Home Depot Foundation and Habitat for Humanity partner to support safe, affordable housing for U.S. veterans

According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, Michigan is ranked #11 in the nation for largest veteran populations. Habitat for Humanity affiliates are answering the call to help our brave service men and women by building and repairing homes, engaging veterans in volunteer opportunities, and educating communities.

The Home Depot Foundation has funded Habitat’s Repair Corps for over 12 years. This program provides support for housing repairs to veterans and has served more than 2,000 veterans across the U.S.  In addition to Repair Corps, The Home Depot’s associate volunteer force, known as Team Depot, partners with local Habitat organizations across the country to build alongside veteran homeowners.

Not all affiliates are awarded Home Repair Corp funding. MCHFH was one of the first to become a Certified Veteran Ready Organization in Michigan. By showing our commitment to our service men and women, Home Depot Foundation has awarded MCHFH over $110,000 over three years. MCHFH could not assist our veterans with their critical home repair needs without the amazing support that Home Depot Foundation has given us for our community.

OUR VOLUNTEERS- Our Backbone

At Mecosta County Habitat, we could do nothing and would be nowhere without our very wonderful volunteers. We depend on volunteers to work at our ReStore, on our Home Construction sites and at our Critical Home Repair projects. We reached out to get one of our dedicated volunteers to speak to her experience.

I am a Veteran and member of the Gerald Pitt American Legion Post 473, Barryton, MI. I mentioned to one of our auxiliary members that I was looking for someone to install a screen door for me. Last year, the wind caught the door and broke it off. I already purchased a replacement door, I just need help installing it. The auxiliary member told me she volunteers with Mecosta County Habitat for Humanity and Habitat has a program to assist veterans with projects. Within a few days the auxiliary member and two guys showed up at my home, tools in hand, to install the door. A couple hours later the new door was hung and working. I am grateful for their quick response to my request, efficiency in installation, prompt clean up and their kindness and courtesy.  My family and I are very happy with the door. Thank you Mecosta County Habitat for Humanity.

Whitmer - Governor Whitmer Launches Program for Michigan Homeowners Experiencing Hardships

The Homeowner Assistance Fund was established under section 3206 of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (the ARP) to mitigate hardships associated with the coronavirus pandemic by providing funds to prevent homeowner mortgage delinquencies, defaults, foreclosure, loss of utilities or home energy services and displacements of homeowners experiencing financial hardship on or after January 21, 2020 or for those homeowners who experience a coronavirus pandemic financial hardship that began before January 21, 2020 but continued after that date.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury notified MSHDA on April 14, 2021 that it will allocate $242,812,277 to the State of Michigan. This number was based on unemployed individuals and the number of mortgagors with delinquent mortgage payments.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has designated the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (the Authority or MSHDA) as the operating agency to set up the Michigan Homeowner Assistance Fund (MIHAF) program in accordance with the guidance provided by the Treasury.
